10 Ways to prepare for an open mic

Check this website:
Find an open mic that is right for you. If you found one and it is not listed on this site or the time is wrong send an update via Comment.
Know the format:
Go to the open mic that you plan on performing at or at least talk to someone who is familiar with the format.
How many songs will you get to play? Is it an open jam where you share the stage?
Plan your set list:
know ahead of time what you are going to play. Remember this is not just your chance to try new stuff. It’s an opportunity to tune your professionalism and stage presence. nothing is harder to watch than an performance filled with awkward breaks and indecision.

You would think this should go without saying. Go over your lyrics. If you screw up the lyric PLAY THROUGH IT. Especially if it is an original song, Nobody will ever know
Tune your instrument:
Before you leave home, and again before your set. Nobody wants to wait for you to tune up.
Be ready to network:
You will want to make some contacts. Have business cards, or at least bring a pen so you can give out your email address. Add some names to you email list. You have a list don’t you?
Get Social:
Tweet, Blog, Email blast. This should be like a mini gig. Shout out to your peeps
Have fun:
You are in the company of other musicians. I can not think of a more receptive group to play for.
